Community

Our group provides employment opportunities in more that 125 countries and we are involved in a number of local projects. Our Community Policy is as follows:

We wish to be an active part of the local communities in which we operate, respected as good corporate citizens. We generally engage in projects that promote our group core values and support training and education.

Business behaviour
We recognise the power of good examples and the importance to communities of companies conducting business in an ethical and lawful manner. In all our activities, we strive to be role models for good business behaviour. This includes acting according to high ethical standards respecting local laws and culture. We are against corruption and it is our policy to work against corrupt practices by constantly focusing on anti-corruption measures that we are able to take as a company. This includes refraining from bribery.

Relief aid
As good corporate citizens we support relief efforts – where relevant and appropriate for us – in cases of unforeseen events, e.g. natural disasters and other emergencies.

Other examples of local initiatives within our group are:

Containers in the community, South Africa
Safmarine’s commitment to the community in South Africa is illustrated by the “Containers in the community programme” which was started in the 1990’s. Recycled second hand or retired containers are used to create much needed infrastructure in the community such as schools, clinics, etc. The aim of the programme is to involve the local community and to seek partnerships with fellow South Africa companies and Safmarine customers. So far, Safmarine has been involved in some 1,800 projects and more than 7,000 containers have been converted for the various projects.

Hope School Project, China
Contributions have been given to the construction of school facilities in two underprivileged areas in China (Hope School in Hunan Province and Hope School in Gansu Province). So far, 16 schools have been constructed or renovated by funds donated by the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. Read more here.

Habitat for Humanity, USA
Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organisation that builds home for low-resources families with the help of the community. Maersk Inc. and Habitat for Humanity formed partnership in the beginning of 2006 and Maersk Inc. has since then donated transportation of over 90 houses and loaned over 36 containers for storage purposes.
